Grow Trees with Us!

Join our hands-on workshop and discover how air prune boxes support diverse root systems, reduce transplant shock, and help trees thrive. Together, we’ll build simple raised wooden boxes and plant young trees —

perfect for anyone interested in sustainable forestry, gardening, or reforestation.

Rofinpark Eberswalde

About the Workshop

MIYA forest is starting its own tree nursery at Rofinpark to grow seedlings

for future plantings. Together, we’ll cultivate 18 different native tree species,

using seeds partly collected from local forests.

In this workshop, our guest experts Kamiel and Joris from

Nuts & Berries agroforestry will show us how to design, build, and maintain

air prune boxes. Step by step, we’ll do the work together—learning how anyone

can grow healthy trees efficiently, even in a very small space.

Join us in launching this exciting project and become part of a greener future!

About Air Prune Boxes:

Air prune boxes are raised wooden planters with open bottoms or mesh.

When roots reach the air, they stop growing longer and instead branch out

— creating stronger, healthier root systems. The result: seedlings that grow

faster, transplant better, and thrive in the long run.

Schedule:

25.10. 2pm - 5pm

On Saturday, we will start by collecting seeds together in the forest, learning how to identify, harvest, and properly store them. We will also cover the basics of seed stratification, an essential step for successful germination. Back at the nursery site, we will mix the substrate and prepare materials for the next day. Participants will gain hands-on skills in seed handling, storage, stratification, and soil preparation.

26.10. 10am - 4pm

On Sunday, we will build the air prune boxes and learn about their optimal dimensions and orientation for healthy tree growth. Together we will also create protective mesh structures against browsing damage and set up shading to give the seedlings the best start. Alongside the practical work, we will discuss the full process of raising trees: what care is needed in the first year, how to monitor and maintain the boxes, and finally how and when to harvest the young trees for planting. By the end of the day, everyone will have gained a clear understanding of all steps involved in growing strong, resilient trees efficiently—even on a small area.
